How to make a family tree
Three steps, with nothing to install and no account to create.
Add yourself
Type your name to put yourself on the chart. A birth year helps, but you can leave it blank.
Grow the tree
Select anyone, then add their parents, partners, children or siblings. Fill in dates and places as you go.
Keep a copy
Your tree saves in this browser. Download it as GEDCOM, PDF or an image to back up, print or share.
What you can record
Real families are complicated. The tree keeps up, and draws each kind of link so you can tell them apart.
- Families as they really are
- Remarriages, divorces, unmarried partners, adoptions, foster children and step-families. Half-siblings and step-siblings are worked out for you.
- Dates you're not sure of
- Write “about 1850”, “before 1900”, “between 1850 and 1855”, just a year, or a note like “spring, after the flood”.
- Names that changed
- Birth names, married names and nicknames, all kept for each person.
- Every generation
- Select anyone to move them to the centre of the chart, with their ancestors above and descendants below.
- Undo
- Every change can be undone, so it's safe to try things.
- Export and print
- GEDCOM for other genealogy sites, PDF for printing, and PNG or SVG images for sharing.
Your family stays on your device
Your tree is stored in this browser, on this device. It isn't uploaded to a server, there's no account, and no one else can see it.
That also means clearing your browser data deletes your tree, and Safari may remove it if you don't open the site for about a week. Download a copy from time to time. You can import it again whenever you need it.

Is this family tree generator really free?
Yes. Every feature is free, including GEDCOM, PDF and image export. There's no trial and no account.
Do I need to sign up?
No. Open the page and start typing. Your tree is kept in your browser, so there's nothing to log in to.
Where is my family tree saved?
In your browser's storage on this device. It saves automatically after every change and isn't sent anywhere. To use your tree on another device, download it as a file and import it there.
Can I lose my tree?
Yes, if you clear your browser data or use a private window. Safari may also remove it if you don't open the site for about a week. Download a copy now and then as a backup; you can import it again at any time.
How do I add a stepparent, an adoption or a second marriage?
Add a new partner to the parent who remarried. Children they have together show up as half-siblings, and their partner shows up as a stepparent. For an adoption, open the child and choose how they're related to each parent: birth, adopted, foster or step.
What if I only know roughly when someone was born?
Type what you know: "1850", "about 1850", "before 1900", "between 1850 and 1855", or a note such as "during the war". The tree shows it as written, and GEDCOM export keeps it.
Can I import a tree from another genealogy site?
Yes. Download a GEDCOM (.ged) file from the other site or program, then choose Import on this page.
Can I print my family tree?
Yes. Download it as a PDF and print it, or save it as a PNG or SVG image.
